A little natural history

A Malagasy frog whose rich orange-red colour is most pronounced in females. It often stays close to damp cover; confirm the scientific name because several Dyscophus species share the tomato nickname.

The wonderfully odd bit

Defensive skin mucus is unusually sticky and may irritate skin.

Would this frog suit a home?

Use verified captive-bred animals, burrowing cover and monitored conditions. Avoid handling, which can provoke sticky secretions, and confirm the species before following any care plan.

Only consider legally obtained, captive-bred animals. Check permits and restrictions where you live, test the habitat first, and arrange an amphibian-experienced vet. This brief profile is not a complete husbandry sheet.
